Guitar Buying Tips
Know what type of guitar you want; the four basic guitar types are:
· Acoustic: No amplification needed
· Classic: An older type with a wider neck to facilitate finger-picking techniques
· Acoustic electric: Can be played both with and without amplifier
· Electric: Amplifier needed
How much are you willing to spend:
· There are many guitars available, the higher the quality, the higher the price. You will find that anywhere between $100 to $300 will buy you a good guitar. When you are a beginner, check out the beginner packages.
Buy a guitar that is best suited for the style of music you want to play. Here are some suggestions:
· Alternative music: any of the 4 basic types are suitable
· Blues: any of the 4 basic types are suitable
· Bluegrass: acoustic steel string, acoustic/electric
· Classical music: acoustic nylon string classic guitar
· Country music: acoustic steel string, acoustic/electric, or electric
· Fingerstyle: acoustic, acoustic/electric, classic
· Folk: acoustic, or acoustic/electric
· Folk/Rock: any of the 4 basic types are suitable
· Jazz: any of the 4 basic types are suitable
· Ragtime: acoustic, acoustic/electric
· Rock: usually played on an electric
· Metal: electric
When buying a guitar for children, keep in mind that their hands are smaller.
· You can buy a ½ or ¾ size guitar.
When buying a guitar for the first time, stick with well known brands.

· Often people upgrade to a higher quality and higher priced guitar. Many owners will offer their used guitars online at places like eBay. When interested in a guitar at eBay, contact the seller. Most of them love to answer any question you have.
